Château Clarettes way of taking away the weeds in the wine fields is to use sheep. The sheep is eating all away- probably one of the most environmentally friendly ways to cut the grass!
Every year in February the fields are invaded by approximately 650 sheep who feed on all the unwanted weeds and plants between the vine stocks. It is quite an impressive sight when several hundred of sheep welling in to the fields and start eating on everything what is green.
The farmer who own the animal bring portable fences with him and move the sheep as they clean field after field. This is a common way to process the soil in this particular area of Provence and the farmer and his sheep visit all the nearby vineyards in early spring.
